Tom Brett is a man of vision, ambition, and courage. From an aspiring young musician with rich musical heritage, to a successful chiropractor, and then finally back to music as a professional entertainer, Tom has seen his musical dream come full circle. “Growing up in a musical family, I always saw music as a very possible way for me to make a living for my family,” he says. “Then I developed this passion for helping people, and chiropractic was the best way at the time for me to do that. Plus it supported our musical habit on the side. But music was always in me, and eventually the opportunity came for this career change. Now music is the avenue I use to help people. It’s an amazing dream come true."
Growing up, Tom learned all about music by watching and listening to his mother, Karlyn, teach over fifty piano students a week in their Spokane, WA home. During his teenage years he participated in formal musical training as well as in a rock and roll band with his friends. A student of the sounds of Elton John, Barry Manilow, and other popular artists of his day, Tom would spend hours at the piano every day improvising and singing to his favorite songs. After serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hamburg, Germany, Tom returned home and sang for a time in the Men’s Chorus at Brigham Young University. After marriage, he and Andrea sang at weddings, funerals, country clubs, churches, and other special events around the Dallas, TX area. As the family developed into a viable act, Tom’s ambition caused him to start seeking bigger and better opportunities.
In 1996, Tom sustained a career-ending neck injury that sidelined him completely from chiropractic service. But he didn’t let this setback keep him from dreaming and taking initiative. By the time the Branson opportunity rolled around in 1999, Tom had landed The Brett Family performances in virtually every major concert hall in the Dallas Metroplex. “He has a real gift for taking initiative and getting things done,” says Tom’s oldest son, Brydon. “He gets into places and establishes connections with people that none of the family could ever do. I think he could land us a gig in the lower levels of the Vatican if he put his mind to it.” Since the Dallas days, Tom has booked The Brett Family in Germany, the 21,000-seat Conference Center in Salt Lake City, UT, in hundreds of other locations all around the United States, and he says he won’t stop until they’ve performed in Carnegie Hall for a sold out crowd.
In addition to his abilities as a leader, Tom is also a world-class performer. He is considered one of the best tenors in Branson. His voice often draws comparisons to the power of Larry Gatlin, and the finesse of Vince Gill or Collin Raye. He still plays piano and guitar, and his skills as an emcee have landed him engagements as the host of everything from telethons to benefit shows. He is also a very capable live show producer, having produced numerous shows for The Brett Family, other acts, as well as the annual Vietnam Veterans Benefit Show in Branson. Even with so much expertise and experience, Tom is not letting down in his musical quest. “I feel like I’m at a new beginning in my music career now,” he says. “We’ve been doing this for so long, but now I feel re-energized and excited about innovating and developing myself as an artist, as well as taking the business in exciting new directions.”
With a history of drive and passion, and with new focus and vision, there’s no doubt that Tom will achieve even greater things as he continues to pursue his musical dreams into the future.
